On the Upbeat, Positively Carolan

The Heart of Brazil

I’ve been tBarra, Salvadoro Fortaleza on the north coast of Brazil, to Centro Rio and of course famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. But it’s Salvador da Bahia, midway between Rio and Fortaleza (Brazil’s first capital and perhaps her very heart) that I fell in love with.

I’ve been there on three separate trips and even toured inland to Cachoeira (site of the first sugar plantation) — I’m into the history of “American” music and that leads to the slave trade and that leads to sugar.

History tells us that 40% of all the Blacks stolen from Africa had the Salvador’s Pelourinho (slave pillory) as their first stop. And to me Salvador has everything. I totally love the combination of beach & city, plus music everywhere, frou-frou Portuguese architecture and African sensibilities.
